Little bit about orthokeratology or ortho-k or corneal refractive therapy

Greetings welcome to Arizona’s vision dr. mark page here chief optometrist at the Ahwatukee office and today we’re going to talk a little bit about orthokeratology or ortho-k or corneal refractive surgery vision shaping system dream lens so there are multiple names for this treatment but what we’re trying to do is improve the distance clarity so when people are nearsighted what’s happening in the eye is actually too long so the light comes in and it’s focusing in front of the retina so things far away from the street signs of TV movies or out of focus so when we put glasses on it redirects the focus to the correct position So, we see clearly now with the orthokeratology we’re taking a lens that’s been just natural this hasn’t been treated we kind of see a little bit of the contour of the I surface so after treatment we can see that it’s kind of changed the shape so because the eyes too long we can make it shorter it allows the focus to recover and seventy-eight percent of the cornea which is the surface of the eye is made with water so because of that water it’s moldable so we put that specially shaped lens on your eye using special technology to measure your shape we can precisely gently while you’re sleeping make the change and really it’s so safe that even kids can do it So, I have a patient that’s five years old and have a patient that is 73 years old so we’ve kind of all ages in between the other research is showing by creating this different curvature here it maybe allowing the eye to stabilize so instead of every year it’s weaker it’s weaker we need stronger glasses hmm this seems to be able to control or stabilize or slow down at least the progression because we’re concerned as the I progresses and it gets longer and longer the retina that lines the inside of the eye itself starts to stretch and that’s stretching eventually for some people could lead to the retina kind of coming apart or detaching other concerns are it stretches the the fibers that control the optic nerve so that can lead to glaucoma and with a stretched inner eye the risk of macular degeneration may increase as well so we’d love to help you see better and especially if your child is starting to wear glasses that are having trouble seeing far away we think this is something that you know we should start sooner rather than later so we’d love to help you and your family so please give us a call but don’t delay call us today.
